Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman was on the phone all day Sunday, making calls in advance of Monday's NHL trade deadline.
"We're talking to a lot of people," Bowman said. "I'm losing my voice here. I've been on the phone all day. You can't predict it. But we are aggressively trying to improve the team."
Bowman said that the Blackhawks continue to pursue depth at two positions.
"In a perfect world, you'd like to have a defenseman and a center," he said. "It's unlikely you're going to hit both those. We're working it on both fronts, because you don't know which one is going to come in your lap in the end."
Trade Rumor - Hockey Wiretap
Rangers Acquire McCabe From Panthers
The Rangers made a substantial move Saturday, acquiring veteran defenseman Bryan McCabe from the Panthers, according to sources.
In return, Florida gets Tim Kennedy and a third-round 2011 draft choice.
McCabe is earning $4.15 million this season, although his cap hit for the year is $5.75 million.
He'll be an unrestricted free agent July 1.
Penguins Land Kovalev From Senators
The Penguins added another top winger Thursday, acquiring Alexei Kovalev from the Senators, according to sources.
Ottawa will get a seventh-round pick in return for Kovalev.
The trade comes days after the Penguins, who have been decimated by injuries, picked up James Neal and defenseman Matt Niskanen in exchange for defenseman Alex Goligoski.
Reports: Bruins Acquire Kaberle From Leafs
The Bruins made a series of moves on Friday, the biggest reportedly acquiring veteran defenseman Tomas Kaberle from the Maple Leafs.
The Bruins would send minor league forward Joe Colborne, a first-round pick in 2011 and another conditional draft pick to Toronto, according to a TSN report.
They needed to clear cap space to absorb the remainder of Kaberle's $4.25 million salary this season, so they turned around and traded forward Blake Wheeler and defenseman Mark Stuart to the Thrashers for center Rich Peverley and defenseman Boris Valabik, according to a league source.
Leafs Confirm Trade Talks With Bruins
Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke told 98.5 The Sports Hub on Tuesday that he was currently in talks with Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli over a possible trade, dispelling any rumors that the embattled Leafs GM wouldn't deal with Chiarelli after the Phil Kessel trade in September 2009 that netted Boston Tyler Seguin (via Toronto's first-round pick in 2010), Jared Knight (Toronto's second-round pick in 2010) and the Leafs' first-round pick in 2011.
Asked if he was engaged in trade talks with the Bruins, Burke said, "Yes."
